TOKYO – An auto-parts operation within Hitachi Ltd. yesterday admitted to more than two decades of skirting inspections and cheating on quality tests of brake and suspension systems.

The company, Hitachi Astemo Ltd., a joint venture with Honda Motor Co., said about 57,000 bake parts (calipers; master cylinders; master cylinders and boosters; electronically controlled brakes; and separate reservoir tanks) manufactured between 2000 and this year were affected. It also said nine customers were impacted by this activity.

Hitachi also said, after a thorough investigation of the parts in question, it “found no safety or performance issues, and believe there are no issues with the past affected products.”

Press reports indicated automakers including Toyota and Mazda confirmed receiving substandard parts said they had independently verified the safety of the products and dismissed the need for recalls.
