Hyundai Motor Co, factory robot builder ABB and Swedish fridge maker Electrolux see the semi-conductor chip shortage easing, executives said Thursday, in a boost for manufacturers after a long struggle for components. An increased supply of chips will reduce one burden facing an industry that is also battling raw material price inflation, a tight energy market and rising interest rates that are throwing a dampener on consumer demand. Hyundai turned in its best quarterly profit in eight years on Thursday as a weak won currency lifted the value of its earnings abroad and demand stayed strong for the South Korean automaker's high-margin sport utility vehicles (SUVs).

ZURICH (Reuters) -ABB gave an upbeat assessment on Thursday about the remainder of 2022 after the Swiss engineering company reported a 20% increase in orders during its second quarter and said its supply chain problems were easing. Chief Executive Bjorn Rosengren said he expected "good momentum" in the second half of the year after the maker of industrial robots and motors reported higher demand from all regions and businesses during the second quarter. "Overall, the supply chain constraints slightly eased compared with the previous quarter," Rosengren said in a statement.

(Reuters) -Top U.S. auto retailer AutoNation Inc on Thursday missed Wall Street estimates for second-quarter revenue, hit by a steep decline in new vehicle sales as strained global supply chains made it harder to replenish depleted inventories. While sales and orders for higher-priced new and used vehicles remains strong, AutoNation began to see "some weakening in demand" for used vehicles priced below $20,000 to $25,000, Chief Executive Mike Manley told Reuters in an interview. AutoNation reported that revenue from new vehicle sales tumbled 14% from a year earlier.

The European Central Bank raised its interest rates for the first time since 2011 on Thursday and unveiled a new bond-buying programme to keep borrowing costs in check for the euro zone's most indebted countries. The ECB raised its deposit rate by 50 basis points to zero, or twice as much as it had indicated after its previous meeting, in an effort to curb record-high inflation in the euro zone. It also raised the rate on its weekly and daily cash auctions by 50 basis points to 0.50% and 0.75% respectively, and signalled that further increases in its three rates were likely to come this year.

Rogers has agreed to sell Freedom Mobile to Quebecor Inc to overcome competition bureau's objection to the Shaw deal. The antitrust bureau has blocked Rogers' proposed takeover of Shaw arguing it would lessen competition in a country where consumers pay among the highest telecoms bills in the world.

A new European Central Bank tool to shield indebted states from soaring borrowing costs failed to impress investors on Thursday, with many worried about a lack of detail and conditions that could make it tough for the likes of Italy to use. Unveiled alongside its first interest rate hike in 11 years, under the Transmission Protection Instrument (TPI), the ECB will buy bonds from countries whose borrowing costs relative to Germany it sees as soaring through no fault of their own. For markets, the most pressing need for the TPI is Italy, which this week saw the collapse of its government after Prime Minister Mario Draghi resigned, putting the second most-indebted euro zone member on course for early elections.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is working to get some cryptolending companies properly registered if they operate more as investment firms, the head of the Wall Street regulator told CNBC in an interview on Thursday. SEC Chair Gary Gensler also said it was up to large financial institutions to decide whether they want to include crypto options in their portfolios for clients, but that the risks of crypto tokens need to be made public. Cryptocurrency companies have said they remain unsure of U.S. regulations governing products that allow customers to earn interest on holdings instead of trading them.
