Ford's latest Mustang has certainly exceeded our expectations, and could be the last solely internal-combustion powered Mustang ever
It might surprise some people, but the era of the internal combustion powered muscle car will one day end. Dodge have given us a glimpse into the future of the muscle car with the all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona SRT. An EV muscle car might sound like sacrilege to many, but that is the reality of the car industry right now. We have to go electric to help our planet. However, internal combustion is not dead yet, as Ford’s new 2024 Mustang has now shown us.
After a fair few months of speculation, Ford has finally revealed the new 2024 Mustang to us all. Code named S650, the new Mustang has finally been shown off in all of its internal combustion powered glory. A mighty Coyote V8 engine is what powers this new generation of Mustang, possibly the last generation of Mustang to be solely powered by an internal combustion engine. It is probably fair to say that this new Mustang has exceeded all our expectations from the muscle car, and redefined the muscle car. There is plenty to be excited about for the 2024 Mustang.
We simply must start by looking at what is under the hood. Powering the main, Mustang GT version of the car is an advanced 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, the fourth-generation of this particular engine. Ford says this will deliver the most naturally aspirated power of any Ford Mustang GT, partly thanks to the new dual air intake box and dual-throttle body design. There is though currently no mention of the power statistic for the new V8 engine within the Mustang. But that is not the only power option available to us.
If you don’t want the full power of the V8 engine, there is also the Mustang EcoBoost model. This has an all-new four-cylinder turbocharged 2.3-liter engine under the hood. Less power of course, but easier for a lot of people to handle. An optional performance pack is also available for both versions, including features such as a Torsen limited-slip differential and a front tower brace. When it comes to transmission, we are delighted to see Ford has saved the manual, with the six-speed manual transmission still an option, and they have really spoiled us because the 10-speed automatic transmission is also an option too.

We spend most of our time within our cars, but we still want them to look good. And this new 2024 Mustang certainly looks the part. Ford don’t hide the fact that this is a heritage-inspired design, with the upper grille design shape influenced heavily by the original 1960s Mustang. We have the classic lightning signature carry on thanks to the tri-bar LED headlamps as well. Beyond that, the Mustang has an incredible sleek roofline, and a shortened rear overhang compared to the previous generation Mustang.
Ford have made every effort to differentiate the EcoBoost and GT models. The GT has larger and more aggressive grille openings at the front, that allow increased airflow for its V8 engine. The new Mustang design as a whole is, to use Ford’s own words, chiseled and edgier, and adds a bit of extra brawn to a car that in some ways had gone a little tame. There are no less than 11 exterior colors available for the new Mustang, while we can even choose three colors for our Brembo brake calipers. And of course, stripes are also available for the Mustang.
Ford has had quite a redesign of the car’s interior. A 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster is the standout feature, while the default gauge setting has shifted from the traditional cool blue and light grey to a more modern copper appearance, similar to the Mustang Mach-E. Ford have also brought us a new race-inspired flat-bottomed steering wheel, to allow for that little more space as we get seated. Wireless phone charging is now within the Mustang’s interior and there is a B&O sound system available too, for those who want the best audio quality possible within their Mustang.

A mighty V8 engine, a refined interior and more aggressive styling certainly makes this Mustang stand out from the crowd. This is one of the most head-turning Mustang designs we have ever seen, and the best thing is we get multiple engine and transmission options. There is every chance that this is the last of the pure internal combustion engine Mustangs. The next generation could be hybrid, it might even be full electric. So we need to savor this while we can, because this might be the last truly great Mustang we ever lay our eyes on.
